In the spring of 1942, Japan attempted to establish a toehold in the Aleutian Islands, convert Midway into an air base for invading Hawaii, and lure the U.S. Pacific Fleet into a final battle that would finish it off. The Japanese fleet depended on radio codes that codebreakers in Hawaii and Washington, D.C. worked around the clock to interpret.
