describes the effort of the Union Army of Tennessee to capture Vicksburg, Mississippi. Taking Vicksburg was the key to ending the Civil War. It was the key to regaining control of the lower Mississippi River, which had been lost when Confederate forces closed the river. Regaining control of this area and the river, the most important economic feature of the continent, would allow the rich agricultural produce of the Northwest to reach world markets.
