By 1860 Abraham Lincoln was on his way to national fame and the presidency of the United States. But in the early 1850s Lincoln did not hold an elective office and wasn't interested in seeking one. Lincoln had already held a variety of elected offices in the 1830s and 1840s and by the 1850s he was focusing on his prosperous legal career and raising his family. |
